Clinical Data

Nelupure – Reduces Sebum Secretion by ¯ Lipid Synthesis & Modulation of Gene Expression

An in vitro study found out that Nelupure decreases the gene expression of proteins required for sebum synthesis, like Leptin, CIDEA, PLIN2, PLIN3, and also those responsible for its inflammatory effects i.e. cytokine IL-8. Another comparative study tested the incubation of sebocytes with Nelupure against a placebo control, for 3 days and analyzed the effects on lipid synthesis. 44% reduction of lipid production was observed with Nelupure along with a 47% decrease in the area of lipid droplets.

Salicylic Acid Reduces Acne Score within a few Weeks

During research conducted at the Dermatology Division of Loyola University, Chicago, it was found that by using a salicylic acid peel, the patients’ acne score on GEA (Global Evaluation Acne) Scale dropped by 1.56 within 9 weeks, and this drop was even more (1.61) when the Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) treatment was aided with this salicylic acid peel (shown in Figure). It was concluded that salicylic acid, even alone, is significantly efficacious and safe for treating moderate to severe acne, and it further augments the efficacy of PDL in this regard.[1]

Significant improvements are seen in >90% of patients with Salicylic Acid within 2 months

Similarly, during a comparative study, carried out at the Assiut University Hospital, Egypt, 30% and 50% of patients with mild acne, and 30% and 40% of patients with moderate acne demonstrated excellent and good improvements, respectively, with the use of salicylic acid peeling for only two months, rest showed fair results, while the percentage frequency of poor results was almost equal to none. This was much better than that of lactic acid peeling used in comparison during this study as shown in the figure.[2]

Lotus Extract – Anti-Acne due to Antibacterial, Sebum-Reducing and Cooling Properties In a review article on herbal cosmetics, researchers stated that the anti-acne effects of lotus extract (Nymphea caerulea and Nelumbo nucifera) is due to its antibacterial and sebum reduction property, and it also alleviates the heat generated on skin during acne due to its cooling effects. [3]

Tea Tree Oil – Highly effective treatment for acne lesions

Regarding the evaluation of effectiveness and tolerability of using Tea tree oil for the treatment of mild to moderate acne, a pilot study was done in Perth, Australia in which participants were asked to apply tea tree oil twice a day for 12 weeks. The percentage of a total number of facial acne lesions in patients fall by 54% till the end of 12 weeks of usage (as demonstrated in the graph), while no serious adverse effects were observed with its use. Therefore, researchers claimed that tea tree oil products are very beneficial for acne, and are well-tolerated [4]

Green Tea and Lotus – Good Combination for Sebum Reduction In a comparative study, the adjunctive use of green tea and lotus over the period of 60 days reduced sebum secretion (a causative factor of acne), and the effects were significantly greater than that of the placebo control group. [5]
